Supporting implementation of the Sustainable Diversion Limit Adjustment Mechanism

The Australian Government is implementing a $3.3 billion package of initiatives to support implementation of the Murray–Darling Basin Plan.

The package includes initiatives to help implement the supply and constraint measures elements of the Sustainable Diversion Limit (SDL) Adjustment Mechanism. Information about efficiency measures included in the commitment package is available separately.

Focus of initiatives

The initiatives aim to:

  • restore stakeholder confidence by increasing transparency and engagement with communities and stakeholders
  • support the timely and full delivery of SDL Adjustment Mechanism supply and constraints projects.

Delivery of annual technical workshops

The Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) will deliver annual technical workshops on the package of SDL Adjustment Mechanism measures, including supply and constraint measures.

Workshops will share information about each project, including assessment and monitoring. By sharing information, the MDBA hopes to build community confidence in the scientific integrity of the projects.

The first technical workshop was held on 28 June 2018.

Supporting environmental works projects

Supply and constraints projects will be implemented by Basin states over the period to June 2024.

A number of these projects involve environmental works, including establishing or refurbishing weirs. The provision of fish passage will be included in these projects.

Fishways include those proposed for the Menindee Lakes Main Weir and the inlet regulator on Frenchmans Creek near Lake Victoria.

Development of constraint measures work plan

The Basin states are committed to developing a work plan for constraint measures. Development of the plan will be coordinated across jurisdictions.

The plan will set out a cross-jurisdictional process for addressing constraints that enables strong community involvement in the development and planning of projects to ensure a staged implementation approach and to ensure all constraints can be successfully implemented.

The MDBA will report annually on progress against the targets for constraint measures.

Delivery

These initiatives will be designed and delivered in collaboration with Basin states, stakeholders and local communities.

Our Water Division will oversee and report on these initiatives.
