We continue to develop world-class climate science risk services and tools. This work helps Australians adapt to climate change and build resilience.
The Australian Climate Service
With world-leading climate science as the foundation, the Australian Government is ensuring Australians have the information they need to reduce risks and seize opportunities. The new Australian Climate Service is a $210 million investment to bring together Australia’s world-leading expertise and information to help local communities build resilience to climate change. It is guided by the Government’s Royal Commission on National Natural Disaster Arrangements.

Climate Services for Agriculture program
The Climate Services for Agriculture program helps Australian agriculture plan for the impacts of future droughts and other climate risks.
CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology designed the service and launched a prototype on 1 July 2021. They are working with users to ensure it meets their needs. They launched a prototype on 1 July 2021. Further updates are planned for December 2021 and June 2022.
An interactive digital platform will provide information on climate risk and impacts on agricultural productivity.
This will help farmers to understand:
- How the climate in their region has changed
- What the climate may look like in the future
- Possible impacts on their commodities
- Options to prepare for future climate impacts.
Drought Resilience Self-Assessment Tool
The Drought Resilience Self-Assessment Tool (DR.SAT) will enable farmers to assess and build their resilience to drought.
The tool will provide farmers with information and resources to assist them to build their resilience and adaptive capacity, tailored to their circumstances.
It draws upon Australia’s leading agricultural, economic, social and environmental research.
Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu are developing the tool with end users to ensure it meets their needs. They launched a prototype on 1 July 2021. The live tool expected to be available in December 2021.
DR.SAT is 1 of 8 foundational programs funded through the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund.

The Climate Change in Australia website provides a comprehensive set of climate projections for Australia.
Localised projections have been produced for some areas of Australia by state agencies.
Natural Resource Management Planning
Impacts and adaptation for Australia’s NRM Regions
The Impacts and Adaptation Information for Australia’s NRM Regions section of the Climate Change in Australia website. provides projections to help NRM groups in each region understand and manage the impacts of climate change. Guidance covers a wide range of material, including:
- Technical environmental mapping
- Vulnerability assessments
- Carbon sequestration research
- Guidance on developing adaptation pathways.
The climate change projections use up to 40 global climate models driven by four greenhouse gas and aerosol emission scenarios and are presented for the eight regions of Australia which will be affected differently by climate change. Results have been prepared for 21 climate variables (both on the land and in the ocean) and for four 20-year time periods (centred on 2030, 2050, 2070 and 2090).
To help improve accessibility, usability and relevance of the projections for the Australian public, the website houses 14 interactive tools for exploring the data at different levels of complexity. This ranges from the Regional Climate Change Explorer, a tool which presents a statement of projected change for each region, through to a projections data download facility, the Climate Futures Tool. Climate Change in Australia hosts a 'Climate Campus' for learning more about climate science and using projections in climate change impacts assessments.
AdaptNRM
AdaptNRM (produced by CSIRO and the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility) was developed to take national-level adaptation approaches and information sources and make them accessible and relevant for regional planning. There are five modules for AdaptNRM:
- Adaptation planning: the NRM Adaptation Checklist helps planners develop climate adaptation plans
- Weeds and climate change: a summary of knowledge about potential changes in weeds and weed management under climate change, with a framework for developing adaptation-ready weed management plans
- Implications for biodiversity: background about a technique used to model biodiversity and demonstrate how the results can be used to evaluate potential implications of climate change for vascular plants, mammals, reptiles and amphibians
- Adaptation of biodiversity: guides decisions regarding potential on-ground options for considering climate change adaptation in biodiversity management
- Shared learning: provides lessons from engagement with science and stakeholders on adaptation
