Department fines company for breaching environmental approval conditions

19 December 2019

(Issued by Department of the Environment and Energy)

The Department of the Environment and Energy has recently fined a mining company for failing to meet environmental approval conditions. On 3 December 2019 the Department issued two infringement notices totalling $25,200 to Venture Minerals for not meeting two of the conditions attached to their approval received under Part 9 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act).

On 3 August 2013, the Department granted approval under the EPBC Act for the Riley DSO Hematite Mine Project. 37 conditions were attached to the approval. The company failed to meet conditions 24 and 29 that required them to notify the Department of the commencement date, and to contribute funds to the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program.

Venture Minerals have cooperated with officers from the Office of Compliance throughout the investigation.

This penalty serves as a reminder that approval holders are expected to fully comply with their approval conditions.
