Assess your opportunities

2. Are any of the following opportunities applicable to your procurement? Select any that apply .

Recycled content

Examples:

  • Products could be made from recycled materials. For example, recycled plastic in mixed polyester uniforms or recycled plastic bags in pavements.
  • Products could be recycled at their end of life. For example, purchasing compostable rather than mixed composite plastic cutlery which can be difficult to recycle
  • Product packaging could be reduced or recycled. For example, office furniture packaged in recycled cardboard.
  • Services which could offer any of the above opportunities. For example, printing services providers are required to recycle ink cartridges. Or building contractors use recycled materials (such as bricks or concrete) where appropriate.
Environmental sustainability

Examples:

  • Prevention of pollution. Includes ways to prevent air and water pollution or reduce use of toxic chemicals. For example, fuel efficient or electric work vehicles that emit fewer pollutants. Or cleaning contractors who use environmentally certified products.
  • Sustainable use of resources. Includes renewable energy, water conservation, minimise material intensive activities. For example, buy certified renewable energy from electricity providers. Upgrade the office water faucets to minimise water use. Or require printers to use 100% recycled paper and natural organic inks for reports.
  • Mitigation of climate change impacts. For example, carbon offsets for travel. Ask suppliers how they will manage extreme weather risks, notably for outdoor activities (such as construction).
  • Protection of the environment, biodiversity and natural habitat restoration. For example, purchase products (such as paper) with biodiversity or environmental offsets.
None of the above

You have identified potential for environmental sustainability or use of recycled content in your procurement

Refer to the Sustainable Procurement Guide on your next steps.

3. Explain how environmental sustainability or recycled content considerations are not relevent to your procurement.

Your justification will help you comply with Commonwealth Procurement Rules.

I would like the Commonwealth Sustainable Procurement Advocacy and Resource Centre (C-SPARC) to contact me for assistance with my procurement.
