The Australian Government is supporting the Australasian Circular Textile Association Ltd (ACTA) to develop a product stewardship scheme to recycle uniforms and workwear.
The problem
Textiles waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams in Australia and end of life uniforms account for an estimated 11,000 tonnes of textile waste every year. Less than 1% of uniforms are recycled, with the rest ending up in landfill.
The solution
Circular Threads is developing a business case and designing a product stewardship scheme for uniforms and workwear. The project will include stakeholder engagement, development of a business case and scheme design.
The project is supported by the University of Technology Sydney Institute for Sustainable Futures and the Global Product Stewardship Council. The Australian Government is providing a grant of $360,510 through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund.
When
The uniform and workwear product stewardship scheme is expected to launch late-2022.
