The Australian Government is supporting RM Consulting Group Pty Ltd (RMCG) to develop a national non-packaging agricultural plastics stewardship scheme.
The problem
Around 90,000 tonnes of non-packaging agricultural plastics are generated each year, with only around 7% recycled. A sustainable solution is needed to reduce waste going to landfill and reduce environmentally harmful activities such as burying and burning agri-plastics waste on-farm.
The solution
The National Non-Packaging Agricultural Plastics Stewardship Scheme is supporting increased recycling of agricultural plastics and provide sustainable disposal options for farmers.
The scheme focuses on the quality of waste collected to improve the efficiencies of recycling it. It identifies and assures the quality of retrieved plastic material, collection and processing of agricultural plastics.
Queensland Fruit and Vegetable Growers Ltd is a partner and the Australian Government is providing a grant of $893,866 for the project through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund.
When
This product stewardship project commenced in January 2021.
