The Australian Government is supporting Close The Loop Ltd to develop a cosmetics waste recycling program.
The problem
Due to product residue and the complex nature of cosmetic packaging, cosmetic products are difficult to recycle through normal processes. As such, the vast majority of cosmetic waste ends up in landfill.
The solution
Close the Loop’s project is establishing a cosmetic recycling scheme, initially focusing on cosmetic makeup products, by developing a comprehensive collection network that will collect, process and recycle this waste. The grant is funding scheme design, stakeholder analysis and mapping, take-back strategies, and strategies for industry and consumer participation.
This project is endorsed by leading cosmetic brands MAC and Estee Lauder, and Accord the peak national industry association for manufacturers and marketers of personal care products. This support provides momentum in shifting the entire industry towards a circular economy to ensure higher rates of recycling of cosmetic products. The Australian Government is supporting the project with a grant of $999,019 through the National Product Stewardship Investment Fund.
When
The cosmetics waste product stewardship scheme is expected to launch mid-2022.
