Establishing Stop Food Waste Australia

The Minister for the Environment launched Stop Food Waste Australia in December 2020, which will play a key role in delivering the National Food Waste Strategy to halve Australia’s food waste by 2030.

Stop Food Waste Australia is led by Fight Food Waste Limited backed by a consortium of partners representing the entire food supply chain and all levels of government.

Stop Food Waste Australia will lead food waste reduction initiatives across the food supply chain. The Australian Government has invested $4 million to June 2024 to support the work.

Stop Food Waste Australia will:

  • implement the Australian Food Pact, a voluntary agreement to bring organisations and individuals from across the food supply chain together, to commit to reducing their food waste
  • develop new, and implement existing, sector action plans to identify and deliver sector specific projects to reduce food waste
  • drive collaboration among the food supply chain and governments, including through an online platform that will showcase case studies, news and a curated communications hub

This work will contribute to the delivery of the National Waste Policy Action Plan.

Australian Food Pact

The Minister for the Environment launched the Australian Food Pact on 21 October 2021.

A key deliverable of Stop Food Waste Australia, the Australian Food Pact is a voluntary agreement that brings together organisations across the food supply chain to focus on food waste prevention, food reuse and donation, and food chain transformation and innovation.

Supported by Stop Food Waste Australia, businesses that join the Australian Food Pact will identify priorities and develop a multi-year plan outlining solutions to reduce their food waste. Participants will be supported to:

  • design and source more sustainable products
  • develop strategies to make farming and manufacturing more efficient (improving operational efficiency to produce more with less)
  • raise awareness and change culture around food waste in businesses, and
  • support the donation of surplus food, or to transform surplus food into new products.

The Australian Food Pact provides access to tools, resources and technical assistance to support these outcomes, and encourages supply chain collaboration between participating businesses.

The types of businesses that can sign up include primary producers, food manufacturers and food and grocery retailers, food service organisations and businesses involved in fresh food technologies. The inaugural signatories of the Australian Food Pact are:

  • Simplot Australia
  • Woolworths
  • Goodman Fielder
  • Coles
  • ARECO
  • McCain
  • Mondelēz
  • Mars
  • Compass Group
  • Foodbuy
