Scholarships for Research in Ozone Science

Australia is recognised internationally for the quality of its climate change and atmospheric science and has a comprehensive program of Southern Hemisphere climate research. Scholarships provided by the Department aim to build that expertise to enhance Australia’s ozone science capacity and increase the global research effort in our region.

Summer Scholarship

The Department will provide another round of the annual Ozone Science Summer Scholarship through the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Climate Systems Science at the University of New South Wales from 2019 to 2021.

Eligible students must be in their second, third, or post-honours year and interested in pursuing a postgraduate degree in climate system science. The Scholarship Program provides a means to encourage these students to look at including an ozone component in future postgraduate studies.

Information on future opportunities for summer scholarships will be made available as they arise on the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Climate Systems Science website.

Since 2015-16 the Department has provided funding for an Ozone Science Summer Scholarship through the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Climate Systems Science at the University of New South Wales. This activity was trialled over 2014-15 and the first annual summer scholarship round was offered from 2015 to 2018.

Research undertaken by recipients of previous summer scholarships includes:

  • Research on an ozone rich stratospheric intrusion into the troposphere and consequent climatic effects
  • An examination of modelled ozone and underlying ozone chemistry against observational metrics to provide confidence in future projections
  • An evaluation of atmospheric chemistry climate model using ozone metrics
  • Development of a novel proxy for Antarctic ozone depletion in the evaluation of chemistry climate models

Many recipients of this scholarship have elected to continue their studies of the ozone and climate change by undertaking PhDs at top ranking national and international universities.

Postgraduate Top-up Scholarship

The Department has previously provided opportunities for a postgraduate top-up scholarship for ozone science to promote postgraduate research into the science of stratospheric ozone depletion and recovery, including linkages with climate change science.

The value of this scholarship was $5,000 per annum for three years. This scholarship supplemented a primary scholarship for doctoral study.

The scholarship was awarded in 2009 and 2012. The two Australian doctorate students who received these scholarships obtained positions in international post–graduate climate-ozone research programs.

Both these students have contributed to Australian ozone science throughout their PhDs, collaborating with other ozone scientists through the Ozone Science Group and contributing to academic papers which were referenced in the 2014 Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion.

Any enquiries on either of these scholarship opportunities should be directed to ozone@environment.gov.au
