The Australian Government has released Standards for Accreditation of Environmental Approvals under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the Standards).
These standards are based on requirements of Commonwealth law and will facilitate the maintenance of strong environmental outcomes through the one stop shop.
The Standards set out:
- Environmental and systems outcomes–to be achieved through bilateral agreements with states and territories
- Standards for accreditation–which reflect the specific accreditation requirements of the EPBC Act, and requirements of Commonwealth law that will be important for the Commonwealth to be satisfied that high environmental standards will be maintained
- Commonwealth considerations–which provide additional guidance on areas that the Commonwealth Environment Minister may take into account in considering whether to enter approval bilateral agreements.
