About the application
The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment has received an application for a permit to kill, injure, take, trade, keep or move various listed marine species and migratory species in a Commonwealth Area under Part 13, sections 215 and 257 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The application is for numerous bird deterrence activities at the ‘Reindeer’ and ‘John Brookes’ platforms in offshore WA. The action will include the installation of laser and noise deterrence systems alongside physical barriers such as bird spikes to prevent birds landing on handrails and platforms. The aim of the action is to reduce bird density and activity in and around platforms to prevent helicopter bird strike and guano build-up and will target several listed marine and migratory bird species under the EPBC Act.
Please see the documents below for further details on the proposal.
If the application for a permit to conduct the activity is approved the permit will be valid for a period of up to five years.
