Request for information for input towards Australia’s sixth National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity

This consultation closed 21 January 2019. The text and documents below remain available for reference only.

The finalised report Australia's Sixth National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity was released in March 2020.

Caring for nature is the shared responsibility of all Australians. All Australian’s – including all levels of government, the public, businesses, Indigenous peoples, private landholders and non-government organisations– are responsible for biodiversity conservation. As well as having value in its own right, biodiversity provides a range of ecosystem services that we rely on to maintain our physical, social and economic well-being. We depend on biodiversity for essential necessities such as oxygen, clean water, fertile soil, nutrient cycling, physical materials for shelter and fuel, climate regulation, and also for cultural and spiritual enrichment of our lives.

As a Party to the Convention on Biological Diversity (the Convention), Australia is formally required to report, on a four-yearly basis, our progress on conservation measures undertaken, the effectiveness of our actions and general progress in implementing the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The report includes progress against Convention’s Strategic Plan and its 20 Aichi Biodiversity Targets and implementation of our National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, which is currently Australia’s Biodiversity Conservation Strategy 2010-2030.

The Aichi Biodiversity Targets, are global biodiversity targets which all Parties to the Convention contribute to in order to meet them collectively. Each Party’s implementation of the Strategic Plan and its Aichi Targets are articulated in national biodiversity strategies and actions plan tailored to national circumstances.

The Australian Government is currently preparing its sixth National Report to the United National Convention of Biological Diversity. As the lead Australian Department on the Convention, the Department of Environment and Energy leads development of this report to determine Australia’s contribution towards global and domestic objectives.

The last national report was produced in mid-2014 – a copy of Australia’s 5th report is available on the CBD website for information.

Input and case studies on the initiatives, projects and activities which form Australia’s contribution to both the Convention’s Strategic Plan and it’s 20 biodiversity focused targets (the Aichi Targets), which all Parties to the Convention have agreed to contribute to achieving, were sought from 30 November 2018 to 21 January 2019.
