The Platinum Jubilee celebrates Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years of dedicated service to Australia and the Commonwealth.

Australia will hold a range of national and community events in 2022 to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Eligible groups and organisations across Australia are invited to hold commemorative events and tree planting activities to mark the Platinum Jubilee (70 years of service) of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in 2022.

These events will serve to honour the legacy of The Queen and her 70 years of service to Australia and the Commonwealth. Planting regionally‑appropriate species that enhance the tree canopy will also leave a legacy of its own—in the form of trees flourishing across the nation for Australians to enjoy into the future.

Investing in the significant occasion of Her Majesty’s Jubilee through community tree planting events across Australia

Planting Trees for The Queen’s Jubilee Program will provide up to $15.1 million of grant funding in 2022 to eligible groups and organisations for community-based tree planting events.

The program complements other initiatives taking place across the Commonwealth to mark The Queen’s Jubilee, such as a tree‑planting initiative in the United Kingdom which is inviting people to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

Under the program, each federal electorate can receive up to $100,000 in grant funding for up to 10 projects nominated by the local federal member of parliament (MP), in consultation with their local community. Grants range from $2,500 to $20,000 per project. Projects are to align with the objective, expected outcomes and eligibility requirements of the program. Additional cash and/or in-kind contributions towards the project costs are encouraged but not required.

Eligible activities are defined in the program’s grant guidelines which are the basis for assessing eligibility. As a guide, projects that may be suitable should include:

• formal commemorative event/s in 2022 to mark the Jubilee commemorations
• activities to plant regionally‑appropriate tree species with a potential height of at least 2 metres when mature
• installation of commemorative signage or plaques.

Federal MPs who choose to participate in the program play a key role, being responsible for identifying and nominating suitable projects and the organisations that are to deliver them. The program encourages MPs to consult with their community as part of identifying and nominating potential projects for their respective electorates. Only nominated organisations will be invited to apply for a grant. An invitation to apply does not guarantee a project will be funded.

Who is eligible for funding?

To be eligible to apply, an organisation must:

• be invited to apply by their local MP,
• have an Australian Business Number (ABN), and
• be an entity type listed in the program guidelines.

A broad range of organisations will be eligible to put forward projects to their local MP.

These include not-for-profit organisations (such as Indigenous organisations), Landcare groups, government and non‑government schools, parents and citizen associations, and other community groups.

Local governing bodies, as defined by the Local Government (Financial Assistance) Act 1995 and several other identified bodies are also eligible.

State or territory government agencies or bodies are not eligible, unless specifically listed in the program guidelines, such as registered schools with their own ABN or certain entities acting as project sponsors. Commonwealth Government agencies and bodies, individuals, and partnerships are not eligible.

How to apply

The program is being delivered by the Industry Business Grants Hub on behalf of the department. Those interested in applying for a grant should consult their website for the latest information.

The program will begin in the 2021-22 financial year. The period for submitting a formal application to the program is expected to open on 11 March 2022. Invited applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as they are able.

To apply to the program, your project will first need to be nominated by your local federal MP for potential funding. You can identify your federal electorate on the Australian Electoral Commission website and details of your local MP at the Australian Parliament House website.

Those interested in seeking funding are encouraged to contact their local MP ahead of the program application period so their project proposal(s) can be considered.

Please note submission of project proposals to your local MP is for the purpose of your local MP determining whether to nominate your project for potential funding. It is NOT a formal application to the program.

Before accepting nomination by a federal MP or submitting a formal application for a grant, eligible organisations should familiarise themselves with the program’s supporting documentation to ensure they are fully aware of the program requirements, including the reporting requirements.

For organisations of projects nominated by their local MP, and who have been invited to apply by the Industry Business Grants Hub, an online portal will be made available for submission of formal application(s) for a grant(s). Invited applicants can submit their formal applications from the commencement of the application period up to the application closing date and time. Details of the current closing date and time are available on the Industry Business Grants Hub website. Applicants are encouraged to submit their application(s) as soon as they are able. This will help facilitate projects commencing as early as possible in 2022.
