The provisional list of 119 animal species, released on 24 March 2020, is a revised version of the list released on 11 February 2020, which included 113 species as high priority for urgent management intervention. Improved spatial information and reports from field assessments led to four bird, one mammal and three reptile species being added to the high priority list, and one fish species and one frog species being removed from the original list.

The March 2020 provisional list includes:

  • 92 vertebrate animal species: 17 bird, 20 mammal, 23 reptile, 16 frog, 16 fish species, and
  • 27 invertebrate animal species: 22 crayfish and 5 other invertebrates (insects and a spider species).

The Expert Panel subsequently undertook a review focused on invertebrates and developed a priority list of impacted invertebrate species.

The priority animals were identified based on the extent to which their range has potentially been burnt, how imperilled they were before the fires (for example, whether they were already listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered), and the physical, behavioural and ecological traits which influence their vulnerability to fire.

Management interventions for 119 priority animal species

In March 2020, 119 animal species were identified as high priority for urgent management intervention following the 2019–20 bushfire.

This document identifies priority management interventions for these species. Developed by the Wildlife and Threatened Species Bushfire Recovery Expert Panel, this analysis of actions will help guide post-fire management and conservation responses.

Actions were based on consensus opinion across many experts and are intended to inform the management response immediately, and in the first year, post bushfire.

While these actions are intended to support the management response for bushfire-affected species, this information should not be the only consideration of decision makers when focusing investment and effort.
