Psittacine birds (household pets and aviary)

We have completed the draft report for the Import risk review for psittacine birds from all countries.

Steps to complete this risk analysis

When we do a risk analysis, we:

  • start the risk analysis by reviewing the science on pests and diseases of concern
  • assess and analyse biosecurity risks
  • develop proposed risk management measures
  • consult the public on the draft report and then review comments
  • publish a final report
  • develop import conditions
  • publish import conditions in our Biosecurity Import Conditions System (BICON)

Your feedback

Thank you for sharing your views, ideas and research. We received over 130 submissions covering a wide range of perspectives.  Your feedback will help inform our final risk analysis for psittacine birds from all countries.

Consultation webinar

During the consultation period we also held a webinar with over 100 registered participants over the course of an hour to discuss the report. If you missed it, you can view a recorded version.

About the draft report

We propose that imports of psittacine birds be allowed from approved countries. All imports must meet the agreed biosecurity import conditions.

The draft report details:

  • diseases of biosecurity concern for this commodity
  • risk assessments for the identified diseases of biosecurity concern.

The diseases that need risk management measures are:

  • avian influenza virus
  • avian orthoavulavirus 1
  • internal and external parasites (excluding protozoa)
  • parrot bornavirus
  • psittacid alphaherpesvirus1
  • psittacine pox virus
  • West Nile virus

Proposed risk management measures include:

  • sourcing from approved countries
  • veterinary inspection
  • laboratory testing
  • quarantine.
