Importing live animals and reproductive material

Not all live animals and reproductive materials are permitted to be imported into Australia; the pest or disease risks associated with their importation may be considered too great.

The Biosecurity Import Conditions system (BICON) provides the import conditions for all permitted live animal and reproductive material imports.

The list below provides additional information for imports of live animals and reproductive material.

  • Animals on vessels
    • Non-commercial vessels
    • Commercial vessels
    • Accidentally imported animals (stowaways/hitchhiking birds)
  • Canine semen
  • Cats
  • Dogs
  • Fertile hatching eggs (poultry)
  • Horses
  • Invertebrates
  • Laboratory animals
  • Live aquarium (ornamental) fish – Freshwater and marine
  • Livestock
  • Other reproductive material – Semen and embryos
  • Pet birds
  • Pigeons
  • Rabbits
  • Zoo animals

IMPORTANT!

No other live animals or pets are eligible for import into Australia. For more information, please see unique or exotic pets.
