Published regulatory decisions

The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment regulates the export of live animals under the Export Control Act 1982, the Australian Meat and Live-stock Industry Act 1997 and associated orders, regulations and standards.

In regulating the export of live animals the department makes certain regulatory decisions.

The department publishes a public statement for significant regulatory decisions it makes.

Public statements

On 16 June 2020, the Department made the decision to issue a reprimand to Australasian Global Exports Pty Ltd for a breach of its licence conditions as it did not have sufficient systems and controls in place to ensure that livestock sourced for export met importing country requirements for a consignment being prepared in 2019. The Department was not satisfied that the AGE consignment met the importing country requirements and took immediate action to stop the export in 2019 when issues came to the Department’s attention.

On 2 June 2020, the Department made the decision to not grant Rural Export and Trading (WA) Pty Ltd an exemption to export livestock after 1 June. The livestock vessel Al Kuwait was unable to depart prior to June 1 as planned, following confirmed cases of COVID-19 among crew members. The exporter submitted an application to the department for exemption from the June 1 export deadline under the Australian Meat and Live‑stock Industry (Prohibition of Export of Sheep by Sea to Middle East—Northern Summer) Order 2020, including an Animal Welfare Management Plan. A statement of reasons is here.
