Fees for cat and dog import permit applications

If you want to bring your car or dog to Australia, you will need to apply for an import permit from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment.

You can lodge an import permit application online.

Fees apply for import permit applications. For full details of these fees, please see the department’s charging guidelines.

Total fees for cat and dog applications

Lodgement and assessment fees apply to each animal in a consignment. Please note that the assessment fees are provided as a minimum charge. If applications are incomplete or require additional effort, further fees may be payable by the importer.

Note: All fees are in Australian dollars ($AUD).

Online lodgement applies to applications received via the department's online lodgement system (these applications do not require department staff to manually enter the information).

A consignment for this purpose is defined as dogs and/or cats being sent:

  • to Australia
  • at the same time from the one country of origin
  • with the same importer and exporter details listed on the import permit application.

Please be aware further advice in relation to permit applications provided by Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment may incur additional charges to the permit application and assessment fee.

Payment of fees

Fees for import permit applications are required at the time of lodgement.

An import permit not be granted until payment is cleared. Payments do not process on the day the application is submitted.  

The lodgement fee is non-refundable once the application has been submitted.

Once an import permit has been granted no refund can be issued as the services provided by Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment have been expended.​
