This accredited course will provide you with strong theoretical and practical skills in illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing-related monitoring control and surveillance (MCS).
About the course
The course will be a mix of in-classroom and field-based learning activities.
Students who pass the course will receive a formal accreditation in IUU fishing related MCS.
We anticipate the training will be delivered in-person by a registered training organisation based in Southeast Asia.
The total study time to is expected to be 4 months spread across 2 years.
Technical help will be provided by specialist Australian agencies, such as:
- Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA)
- Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).
Costs
The Australian Government will cover the cost of:
- MCS training course (including course materials)
- flights
- accommodation
- per diems (per day costs at a rate agreed in advance)
- related travel and visa costs.
Timing
The first round of the course will start in the second half of 2022. More opportunities for enrolment for courses occurring over the period 2023-2024.
We will release the course structure and curriculum in 2022.
If you register interest in the training, we will notify you of all program updates.
If we’re not able to offer in-person training during this timeframe, we’ll develop and offer online resources and training instead.
Criteria
- The training course is available to all pre-existing RPOA-IUU countries and nominations should be considered and recommended by RPOA-IUU sub-regional groups. Applicants should be relevant government agencies interested in gaining skills in MCS.
- We will evaluate MCS training course requests according to an applicant’s:
- existing skills and knowledge in MCS or related fields
- previous and current work experience in MCS or related fields
- language skills (English proficiency preferred).
- We encourage women and people with disabilities to participate (equal access).
