Australian public service employee census

Each year our staff take part in the Australian public service (APS) employee census. All staff across the APS were able to complete this survey.

We release our census results to be more transparent and accountable.

What we do with the results

We support our people to deliver effective and efficient public services.

The census allows staff to have their say on important workforce issues. This includes:

  • job satisfaction
  • employee engagement
  • performance management
  • leadership
  • general impressions of the Australian Public Service

We use census results to inform strategies, policies, and evaluate initiatives. However, they need to be studied in context. They reflect the perceptions of employees at a point in time (May to June 2019).

We protect the privacy of our staff.

Census reporting is subject to strict privacy rules. We don’t report results unless we have at least 10 staff responses.

These results don’t reflect the views of all our staff. Only the ones who chose to respond. Read more about how we interpret and benchmark the results (APSC website).

Our department was established on 1 February 2020. Before this, we were the:

  • Department of Agriculture
  • Department of the Environment and Energy (Environment portfolio)

The 2019 census results reflect the previous departments.
